Upper Launch // Sean's Midflip Hairwhip

doublecappuccino posted a photo:

So today, I go out to 3rd Avenue to check out the scene after getting out of a longish meeting and I didn't expect much because it was around 2 pm and most of the locals don't generally show up until the winds pick up later in the afternoon. Or if they do, they mill around and drink beer and give weather reports to their mates via cell phone. Anyway...

As I popped the trunk and reached for the camera bag, I overheard a couple of guys saying they were heading out on the water. I didn't recognize them, and figured they were from out of town since they were much earlier than the usual crowd. But I was glad to hear there'd be some action.

When they put in, I heard one of them say something tongue in cheek like "this water is not warm" and when I looked I did a doubletake because they had on shortsleeved wetsuits. Those are pretty uncommon in these parts, for good reason...bay water be frigid!

Even though the wind wasn't particularly strong, I was floored by these two young guys with (photographically appealing) long hair, fluid styles, and a seemingly bottomless bag of tricks.

After the winds hit a lull, they packed it in and I introduced myself as they were rolling up their kites. It turns out they're from Maui on their way down to a Kiteboarding expo in Pismo Beach (a few hours south of here).

This is the only shot I'll be posting today, but that's primarily because I shot mostly film, about 2.5 rolls worth, including a roll of B&W (Neopan 1600) and Color Slide (Ektachrome Plus 100).

Looking forward to getting those rolls back.

This is Sean from Maui.

Naish Boards 2007

Product Release

The Custom Wave T: 4’7”

The Custom Wave T is a wave-dedicated twin tip. At 4’7”, with full surf rails and a single-to-double concave bottom shape, the Custom Wave T gives you all the grip you need to ride fully committed in waves of all sizes. Still a true symmetric twin design, it also offers freestyle performance unique from any of our other twin ranges.

The SS Boards: 4’10”, 5’4”, 5’10”

The SS boards are three new shapes added to our wave range for 2007 developed to excel at faster speeds, bigger waves and stronger wind. Because of power that can be generated by the kite, the SS is a great choice for any wave condition where you want super solid, reliable performance.

For those unfamiliar with kiteboarding... this is not a good thing. You cannot simply let go, as you are tethered to the kite by a harness (which is a good thing, else it would fly away). So you hold on. And the kite just keeps going, dragging you skipping along the water's surface until it eventually nosedives.

All that is to say that this is the beginning of a wipeout. =D
